What is a Shipping Box?
A shipping box is the corrugated carton most people picture when they hear the word box. Four walls, four flaps on top and four underneath, sealed with a strip of tape. The style is a regular slotted container, RSC for short, or FEFCO 0201 in the standard catalog of box styles, and it is the workhorse of every warehouse and carrier network in the country. A custom shipping box is the same carton with your brand printed on it, so the plain brown box your customer signs for becomes the first thing they see of you.
Packwire shipping boxes are made from single-wall B-flute corrugated board in White Board or Kraft Board. They come in seven stock sizes or any custom size made to order, print in full color on the outside from 10 boxes up, and arrive glued and flat, ready to pop open and tape.

|---|---|
| Board | Single-wall B-flute corrugated, 32 ECT, about 1/8" thick |
| Surfaces | White Board (white on both faces) or Kraft Board, with E-flute, C-flute or double wall by quote |

| Printing | Full color, printed directly on the board, outside |
| Sizes | 7 stock sizes from 6" × 6" × 6" to 17" × 14" × 12" (inside dimensions), custom sizes by quote |

Why brands choose custom Shipping Boxes
Every parcel you send is a few square feet of advertising that you are already paying to print, pack and ship. A plain brown box says nothing about who sent it. A custom printed shipping box says your name on the truck, on the doorstep and on the counter of the shop that receives it, and it tells the person opening it that the contents were worth the trouble.
It also works harder than a label. Your logo on every face means the box reads from any angle in a stack, handling instructions and a reorder code can print right on the board, and wholesale buyers unpack a carton that looks like the brand they bought. For e-commerce orders, subscription shipments and wholesale cases, the shipping box is the packaging your customer meets first.
Custom Shipping Box sizes and prices
Seven stock sizes cover most of what ships in a carton, from a 6 × 6 × 6 inch cube for a single product to a 17 × 14 × 12 inch case for wholesale orders. Pick the one that fits closest and the quote card prices it on the spot. Need something in between, bigger or an odd shape? We make custom sizes to order. Choose Custom size in the quote card, tell us the inside dimensions and the quantity, and our team quotes it as soon as possible.
Sizes are inside dimensions, written length × width × depth. Length and width are the two sides of the base, depth is how tall the box stands when closed. The walls add about a quarter inch outside, a little more in depth where the flaps stack, and we hold a tolerance of 1/8 inch on shipping boxes because of the glued corner joint. Carriers size a parcel by its longest side plus the distance around the other two. Our largest stock box measures about 69 inches that way, comfortably inside the USPS, UPS and FedEx limits.
Custom shipping boxes cost from $1.08 per box at the largest quantities to between about $5 and $11 per box at the 10-box minimum, depending on size. A 12 × 10 × 8 inch shipping box on White Board is $7.01 each for 10 and $3.91 each for 500. The table shows all seven stock sizes at those two quantities, priced on White Board with artwork covering up to a quarter of the box. Click a size to open it in the designer.
| Size (L × W × D, inside) | 10 boxes | 500 boxes | Open in the designer |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6" × 6" × 6" | $5.73 each | $2.41 each | Design this size |
| 8" × 8" × 6.5" | $5.80 each | $3.35 each | Design this size |
| 10.5" × 10.5" × 5.5" | $6.96 each | $3.61 each | Design this size |
| 12" × 10" × 8" | $7.01 each | $3.91 each | Design this size |
| 12" × 12" × 10" | $8.60 each | $4.63 each | Design this size |
| 16" × 16" × 10" | $10.83 each | $6.30 each | Design this size |
| 17" × 14" × 12" | $10.86 each | $6.12 each | Design this size |

How custom Shipping Box pricing works
There are no setup fees, no printing plates and no tooling, so a run of 10 boxes is priced the same way as a run of 2,000. That is what makes a printed carton practical for a first wholesale order, a seasonal promotion or a test of a new size before you commit to a pallet of them. Large runs get the same board, the same print and the same proof, at a lower unit price.
Five things set the price, and the quote card above shows the effect of each one as you change it.
Shipping Box materials
Both surfaces sit on the same single-wall B-flute corrugated board, 32 ECT and about 1/8 inch thick. Corrugated board is a fluted inner layer glued between two flat liners. B-flute is the medium wave, about 47 flutes per foot, thick enough to cushion a drop and smooth enough to carry sharp print. ECT is the edge crush test, the standard measure of how much stacking load the board takes. The two options differ in the liner, the paper you print on.
Choose White Board for colors that print bright and true, or Kraft Board for the natural, unbleached look that many brands pick on purpose. Hover over the photos to see the texture up close.
Most Popular
White Board
A mottled white liner on both faces, so the box is white inside as well as out. Colors print bright and true, and most of our customers choose it.
Natural Look
Kraft Board
Unbleached natural kraft on both faces. Colors print softer and the board itself reads as recycled, which suits earthy palettes and understated brands.
Shipping something heavy, fragile or very large? We make the same box in E-flute for a smoother print surface, in C-flute for more cushioning, and in double-wall board for heavy or stacked loads. Request a quote with your size, quantity and what you are shipping.
Built to be stacked, dropped and delivered
A shipping box is the outer layer of the package, so it takes the handling. The board is rated for around 60 pounds of product, and the glued corner and taped flaps hold the carton square through the drops, sorters and conveyor belts between your dock and your customer. Put several retail units in one carton and it travels as one piece.
Planning to palletize? Stacking strength depends on the box size, the load and how long it sits in storage. Our box stacking strength calculator shows how high a carton can safely go.
Custom printed Shipping Boxes, edge to edge
We print directly on the board, edge to edge and on every outside face, on digital presses with UV-cured inks. There are no labels and no laminated wraps, so the print is part of the box, and you can change the artwork between orders at no charge.
Digital printing on corrugated skips the plates a flexographic press needs, which is what lets photographs, gradients and small type print cleanly on B-flute. The ink lands on the liner and cures under UV light at once, dry and rub-resistant before the sheet is cut, scored and glued.
Bring your logo and your website's palette to the loading dock in full CMYK color, with clean lines and fine detail that stay consistent from the first carton in the run to the last.
The inside of a Shipping Box
A shipping box opens from the top, so the inside shows while it is packed and again when your customer lifts the flaps. By default it stays unprinted, clean white on White Board and natural kraft on Kraft Board, and it recycles as it is. Want a message under the flaps or a pattern on the walls? Inside printing is available on request. Ask when you order and we will quote it.
Shipping Box dieline and parts
A shipping box arrives glued and folded flat. Pop it open, fold the bottom flaps in, short flaps first, and run one strip of tape along the seam. Pack, add void fill if the product needs it, fold the top the same way and tape. For heavier loads an H pattern of tape across the end seams adds strength. A practiced packer does it in about fifteen seconds, which is why the style has been the standard for a century.
The blank
The flat sheet a shipping box is cut from, the blank, runs once around the box plus the glue tab one way, and the depth plus one width the other, because each flap is half a width. For a box of length L, width W and depth D that is about 2 × (L + W) + 1.25 inches by D + W. A 12 × 10 × 8 inch box comes from a blank about 45 by 18 inches, and that area is what the price follows. Glued and folded flat, the same box measures about 22 by 18 inches. Need the production file for a size? Request a dieline and we will email it to you.
Where the print goes
Everything you design prints on the outside of the sheet, which is the view shown here. The six faces in the 3D designer are the four walls and the top and bottom. The top and bottom are the flaps, so artwork placed there is split down the middle where the two outer flaps meet. Opened flat, one half of each is upside down on the sheet, the half on the back wall's flaps, so that the two halves read as one piece once the flaps close. That is what the arrows mark. The inner flaps tuck under them, and only the glue tab, the manufacturer's joint, carries no print.
| Part | In the 3D designer | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Front and back | Front, Back | The two long walls, the length of the box by its depth. |
| Sides | Left, Right | The two short walls, the width by the depth. |
| Outer flaps | Top, Bottom | On the long walls, each half the box width, so the pair meets in the middle. The tape runs along that seam. |
| Inner flaps | No face of their own | On the short walls. They fold in first and sit under the outer flaps. |
| Glue tab | Not printable | The manufacturer's joint, glued to the first wall at the factory. The one glued corner is why the box arrives flat. |

Eco-friendly Shipping Boxes, made locally from recycled board
Every Packwire shipping box is made locally, in the United States, close to the customers it ships to and by people you can reach on the phone. Local manufacturing is what makes the rest possible, from shorter lead times and fewer supply-chain surprises to less freight on every order and the same quality from one run to the next. The board contains at least 50 percent recycled fiber and the finished box is curbside recyclable across the US.
A box that fits its contents needs less void fill and avoids the carrier charges that are based on size rather than weight, known as dimensional weight. Our DIM weight calculator shows how a size change moves that charge. Corrugated inserts and partitions, available from 500 units, recycle with the box.
Custom Shipping Box questions
Yes. Our standard shipping box is single-wall B-flute, about 1/8" thick and rated 32 ECT, which carries around 60 lb. We can also make RSC shipping boxes in E-flute for a smoother print surface, in C-flute for more cushioning, and in double-wall board for heavy or stacked loads. Our team quotes these rather than pricing them in the configurator. Request a quote with your size, quantity and what you're shipping.
Yes. Enter your ZIP code in the quote card at the top of this page and it shows the shipping cost and an estimated delivery date for your order before you buy. The cart shows live carrier rates for your full address, and sales tax is calculated at checkout. US deliveries carry no sales tax.
Yes, within a small manufacturing tolerance. The sizes on our website are inside dimensions, so the outside of the box is a little bigger by the thickness of the board. Our digital cutting tables hold sizes to within 1/16". Shipping boxes can vary by up to 1/8" because of the glue flap. That's why we suggest adding about 1/8" on shipping boxes when you measure your product.
Each carrier sets its own size and weight limits for parcels. Here is a general overview:
| Carrier | Minimum Size | Maximum Size | Max Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| USPS | 3.5" x 5" x 0.007" | 27" x 17" x 17" (machinable parcels), or 108" combined L + girth | 70 lbs |
| UPS | 6" x 4" x 0.75" | 108" max length, 165" combined L + girth | 150 lbs |
| FedEx | 6" x 4" x 1" (practical minimum) | 108" max length, 165" combined L + girth (Ground Economy: 70 lbs max) | 150 lbs |
Packages exceeding these limits may be classified as oversized, incur surcharges, or require freight shipping. UPS and FedEx both apply large package surcharges when length + girth exceeds 130", and UPS also when length exceeds 96".
Staying inside the limits is only half the cost question. What you actually get billed for is usually dimensional weight, not actual weight. Three free tools help you check before you commit to a size:
- Dimensional Weight Calculator: the billable weight UPS, FedEx, USPS, DHL Express and Amazon Shipping would each charge for your box, plus the surcharge thresholds you are near.
- Freight Class Calculator: your NMFC freight class if the order ships LTL freight rather than parcel.
- Box Size Optimizer: the smallest box your product actually fits in, which is what lowers both of the above.
For reference, Packwire's own boxes run from 2" x 2" x 2" up to 20" x 20" x 6" for mailers, and up to 17" x 14" x 12" for shipping boxes, so every size we make is within all three carriers’ maximum sizes.
Good to know: these limits are for general information and can change at any time, so check the current requirements with the carrier before shipping. Carrier rules verified July 30, 2026.
The minimum order for custom shipping boxes is 10 boxes, and any quantity above that is priced live in the quote card at the top of this page.
Production of custom shipping boxes takes 10 to 20 calendar days, depending on quantity, and starts once you approve your online proof, so the clock runs from approval rather than from checkout. Transit adds roughly one day to a week, depending on your location and order size, so plan on about 2 to 4 weeks door to door. Enter your ZIP code in the quote card to see an estimated delivery date, and confirm exact dates with us before you plan a launch.
Need it sooner? Just ask. If the production schedule permits, we often expedite at no extra charge, and rush options are available for tighter deadlines. Contact us with your timeline.
Five things set the price of a shipping box. They are size, surface (White Board or Kraft Board), quantity, ink coverage and whether the inside is printed. Yes. Our corrugated boards contain at least 50% recycled content, and all our boxes are 100% recyclable through standard curbside recycling. We partner with suppliers who follow responsible forestry practices. Our digital printing is also inherently more sustainable than traditional methods. It uses no printing plates, makes less chemical waste and lets us print only what's needed, which cuts overproduction.
Curious which liners are virgin kraft and which are recycled? The Packaging Board Chart breaks down every paper in a corrugated board.
